GSM vs GPRS vs EDGE vs 3G vs HSDPA vs HSPA+ vs 4G LTE

Leave a Comment

Most of you have heard this words but aren't clear what these acronyms stand for ,so i decided to make a dedicated post regarding the same.

2G  aka GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications ):

  • GSM supports voice calls and data transfer (SMS) speed up to 9.6kbit/s.
  • Today GSM networks have spread over 218 countries worldwide and it allows the international roaming capability.

2.5G aka GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) :
  • GPRS is a packet-based wireless communication service.
  • It is a 2G technology network that support a download speed of up to 114Kbps.
  • Limitation of GPRS is that GPRS data cannot be sent while a voice call is in progress.

2.75 G aka EDGE(Enhanced Data GSM Evolution) :

  • GPRS and EDGE are both 2G technology but EDGE is significantly faster with a download speed of up to 384Kbps
  • EDGE is sometimes called a 2.5G network as it also has some characteristics of a 3G network but it doesn't satisfy the specification.
  •  EDGE is multiple 2G connections combined.
  • In EDGE, you might not hit desired 384Kbps consistently which depends on other users.
  • This is shown by a E symbol next to the signal bar.

3G:
  • Introduction of 3G network made video calling and seamless streaming of video possible, with download speed of up to 3.1Mbps.
  • Here we will get a desired pipelined providing the 3G speed consistently.
  • 3G networks do not use the same radio frequencies as 2G so mobile operators must build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies.
  • This is shown by a 3G symbol next to the signal bar.

    3.5 G aka HSDPA(High-Speed Down-link Packet Access):
    • It is based on the 3G network and an enhancement to 3G.
    • Thus has a faster speed, download speed can be up to 14Mbps.
    • This is shown by a H symbol next to the signal bar.

    4G aka HSPA+(Evolved High-Speed Packet Access):
    • HSPA+ is an evolution HSPA(HSDPA&HSUPA).
    • It is a 4G technology that allows download at a rate of up to 168Mbps.

    4G LTE(Long Term Evolution):
    • LTE is a 4G communication standard that supports HD video streaming, download speed as high as 299.6Mbps.

    Summary :
    GPRS(114Kbps) < EGDE(368Kbps) < 3G(3.1Mbps) < HSDPA(14Mbps) < HSPA+(168Mbps) < 4G/LTE(299.6Mbps)

    Samsung Cheats Again with Note 3 Benchmarks

    Leave a Comment
    Earlier this year, Samsung  was caught boosting benchmark results of  Galaxy S4 ,as reported by AnandTech . Now Samsung has been caught cheating on benchmark tests once again and this time with the Galaxy Note 3.

    Galaxy Note 3 showed a 20% increase in scores for GeekBench 3, but when it came to Linpack test the result was as much as 50% higher.Samsung Galaxy S4 scores too were disputed by reviewers. Antutu, GeekBench, Linpack, Benchmark Pi etc  give scores based on various parameters, such as web browsing, graphics rendition, data read/write rate etc.

    "We noticed an odd thing while testing the Samsung Galaxy Note 3: it scores really, really well in benchmark tests—puzzlingly well, in fact,We also found a way to disable this special CPU mode, so for the first time we can see just how much Samsung’s benchmark optimizations affect benchmark scores” Ron Amadeo reports for Ars Technica.

    It seems Samsung is trying to polish the octa-core Galaxy S4 reputation.

    Each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. [New UI] YouTube 5.0 Download

    youtube-logo

    YouTube started rolling out a big update  with the headlining feature being in-app multitasking means now you can minimize a video while searching for the video .From there, you can dismiss said video by swiping it left or right, and bringing it back to full size is accomplished by tapping the video or an upward swipe.
    Update #1: A brand new app icon which is shown above.
    Update #2: The landscape UI on 7" tablets is now no longer just full-screen like it is on phones. Say hello to a fully-functional landscape tablet UI.

    Update #3: At last, YouTube now honors the global auto-rotate setting and doesn't flip to landscape if auto-rotate is off. However, there's now a button in the bottom right corner of the video to force the landscape full-screen mode if you want it. I think it's the ideal solution to this previously controversial situation.

    Update #4: The TV Queue UI got updated as well.

    A brand new card-based UI - the app looks better than ever before and also it gives hints to upcoming Android 5.0 UI (cards based)
